World Internet Summit-Easy Riches or Wasted Sweat
The World Internet Summit is the new kid on the block. Every year has its highlight-one thing that makes all other events pale into insignificance-the flavour of the month, or should I say year. Currently Internet Marketing is vying for pole position. The power of the internet is huge; almost unfathomable, and it’s like an alien creature feeding on itself; it’s growing exponentially. You tube now has 71 million visitors a month-more than Google, (although Google very cleverly bought out You tube). The pace of change is “faster than the speed of light.” Just when you’re starting to master one technique you discover its old news, and the herd has moved on. Video is fast replacing the written word, and as soon as we get talking computers, books will probably become antiques.
Back to internet marketing:
Internet marketing “experts” are mushrooming. The World Internet summit is packed full of them. There are hundreds of guru’s who claim to be able to teach you how to make money online. The recipe is really simple, and as old as time itself. A portion of human greed mixed with a generous portion of desire to get out the rat race, off the hamster wheel, and to be able to earn a living working for oneself and not a boss. All the hard sales pitches leverage these emotions. Of course they parade before us the examples of those that have allegedly made their fortune online with screen shots of the large deposits on their bank statements, and whilst I don’t doubt that the claims have at least a respectable amount of truth to them, we never hear about the thousands that fail.
The truth of the matter is that the internet is becoming very competitive and making money online for most of us is really difficult. I’m sure it can be done and I’m sure there are many opportunities out there, but unless you’re gifted with supernatural creativity it’s tough.
Most of the internet marketers have moved from promoting their own products to a far bigger market- the internet Newbie. Us!- The gullible herd still trying to make our first £1,000. For every £ we make we spend £100, always driven by that elusive dream of making it happen. Google AdWords campaigns, internet training, support, outsourcing, marketing, listing fees-then there is all the software suites you need to get there: web building software, market research software, video software, article creation and distribution software, hosting, and the list goes on. Each software suite has its own learning curve. Some have really good tutorials….but it all takes time-that precious resource that is in short supply.
It is not the aim of this article to put you off internet marketing, or to discourage you from attending the World Internet Summit event, but simply to give you a reality check. This is not something you do in your spare time; it’s not a hobby. To succeed you need to treat it as a job, as a career, a project that needs both time and resources. You need to formulate a formal strategic plan, allocate sufficient time, draw up your budget and commit resources. You will initially need to spend less time with your family, less time watching TV, playing sport, and sleeping. If you cannot make this sacrifice-don’t do it.
At times, like with all jobs it will be a real drag, but you have to fight through the pain. The learning curve is vertical. Every new thing you learn gives you the painful reminder of how little you actually do know. It can be downright de-motivating, and without the power of positive thought and self motivation you may as well devote your time to planning a bank robbery.
Once you have carefully considered the commitment needed, accept that your first investment is the most expensive, but the cornerstone upon which your internet marketing career foundation is built. Don’t skimp. Get the best training and support you can. Without it you’re sunk. Believe me! With it you’ve got a fighting chance. You will leave the course thinking you’ve got it all. You get home, turn on your computer and within a few key strokes you already have a dozen queries.
